5 Steps to Improve Your Beauty Sleep

May 18, 2022

We’ve all heard someone tell us that we need to get our beauty sleep (rude) but, okay what does that really mean? It’s true that a good night’s rest can boost our productivity, strengthen our immune system, and reduce inflammation under our eyes (so long, bags!) — but did you know that a sufficient amount of rest can also benefit your hair?

The truth is, a lack of sleep can lead to stress which is a contributing factor to hair loss. Sleep produces a natural hormone you’ve probably heard of before called melatonin and when we increase natural melatonin in our body, we can actually strengthen our hair and even help it grow faster!

In order to soak up all the benefits of a good night’s rest, we’ve compiled a list of PM rituals to build your beauty routine from the inside out.

Step 1: Upgrade Your Sleep Set

The best place to start when seeking tips for beauty sleep is ensuring you have the right equipment. We know the value in using high-quality products and the same way we invest in our hair care we do in our sleep care.

Just think about how many hours you spend in your bed — something you use that often should be something to invest in. A premium mattress and pillows made of memory foam has both a long shelf life and will give you the good night’s rest you deserve.

As for your sheets? Consider swapping your cotton or linen pillowcases for silk ones to enhance your beauty sleep. While the first two options are more popular, those fabrics are rough, which means your hair gets stuck and pulled more often. As a result, you might experience some physical hair damage and frizz, especially if you have curly hair. Silk and satin pillowcases are much more smooth, breathable and hypoallergenic. Read our blog on the 8 Best Silk Pillowcases For Hair and Skin to learn more about the topic.

Step 2: Set A Sleep Alarm

You set an alarm to wake up each morning but how often do you set a sleep alarm? It’s easy to get carried away scrolling through TikTok or watching yet another episode of Selling Sunset so having a reminder to go to bed is just as important as the one that gets you out of it.

Avoid the O-M-G moment when you peel away from your phone and realize it’s 1AM by working backwards from when you need to wake up and setting an alarm that gives you at least 7 to 8 hours of beauty sleep.

Step 3: Updo’s are a Do

Getting your hair off your face might not necessarily make you sleep any better but it will help improve your skin and hair health. By pulling your locks into an updo you prevent the natural oils and dirt that built up in it from getting on your face and causing breakouts.

It can also help curb frizzing and breakage which — need we say more? Try a loose braid or top knot, nothing that will tug at your scalp too hard but will keep your strands at bay. You can also treat breakage in your sleep by using our Caviar Anti-Aging Restructuring Bond Repair Overnight Serum. Just apply to dry hair, catch some zzz’s, and shampoo it out in the morning.

Step 4: Snooze Your Notifications

We use our phones for everything these days: talk, text, entertainment, work… the list goes on! It’s easy for our sleep to get disrupted by the constant buzzing and ringing of our notifications so try setting a snooze on your alerts and plugging your phone across the room. Your emails can wait until the morning, we promise.

Step 5: Decompress

Now that your phone is on silent you can start getting in the right mindset for sleep. Find what calms you before bed and make it into your ritual. That could mean a short meditation, a quick lymphatic face massage using a gua sha, or turning your nightly skincare routine into your own mini spa by lighting candles and diffusing eucalyptus in your bathroom. Whatever it may be, take a few moments to really let your body release before climbing into bed and powering down for the night to get your mind in the mood for some R.E.M.
